Most engines use split bearings in the cylinder head to support the camshaft. To machine the cylinder head bearings the upper bearing cap or cover must first be assembled to the lower half in the cylinder head. After machining the bearings cylinder cap or cover must be disassembled so the camshaft can be fitted and the caps finally reassembled.

Presta camshafts with integrated bearing blocks are ready-to-install. Through the use of bearing blocks the camshafts can be installed directly onto the cylinder head. The tunnel machining of the bearing as well as assembly and disassembly of the split bearings is no longer required.

     

The most important advantages of camshafts with integrated bearing blocks are:

• Reduction of costs and weight by replacement of the ladder frame
• No tunnel machining of bearings
• No need to assemble/disassemble the bearing shells
• Reduction of friction by fitting roller bearing or coated bearings
• Utilization of different bearing materials and bearing types
• No misalignment of the bearing shells
• Standardization of the cylinder heads on the primary drive side as well as simpler cylinder head cover
• Assembly of the camshafts after bolting down the cylinder head to the main block
• Simple to repair in case of damage to the camshaft bearings
